External Sender - Please use caution with links or attachments. Hello, I am writing to ask that the city not allow rezoning for the compass point subdivision. Although the developer has reduced the proposed number of units, the result is still not a healthy community. The City of Meridian has repeatedly stated that their goal is to create a healthy community. The plans for so many houses squeezed in tightly would deprive residents and neighbors of one of Idaho’s greatest assets: space. I have lived, with my children, in housing with very little greenspace (although, not to this extent) and it becomes a struggle for the entire community. Since playing in in the green-buffer next to a busy road, or playing in the irrigation canal are not choices, they do not serve the purpose of a greenspace. The children will be playing in the road. Currently I am serving on the HOA board in the neighboring Cavenaugh (Silverwater) Neighborhood. Our Neighborhood includes row houses (which are not the zero lot lines like the proposed compass point, they at least have 10 feet between them). And I know from my position that the two greatest complaints that we see are parking: due to lack of garage and driveway space, people park awkwardly which is a nuisance generally, but also becomes a safety issue as these cars block the ability to see children playing in the street. This would be even more of an issue in this neighborhood where children would have no other outdoor options, not even a nearby park like our neighborhood has. The second most common issue is unsanitary green areas due to animal waste, since all neighbors must use the same scarce green spaces. The proposed plan does not contribute to a healthy community. I recognize the city is trying to address the problem of high density housing, but this is not the kind of project contributing to an affordable housing solution for our city. Affordable housing does not mean sacrificing a child’s ability to safely play outside, and it does not require feeling crowded. To be perfectly honest, the section 8 housing that I lived near in New York City had more green space than this. It truly feels as though the development does not have local interest in mind. Please do not rezone for a project that shows such disregard for our community health. Thank you, Kimberly Horch 1
