Mayor Simison, Thank you for your response and additional information about the process moving forward. I appreciate your views and copied our City Clerk to have included your comments and my response for the public record. Just so we are clear, the owners have asked the City for a Conditional Use Permit (CUP). People have the right to ask, but asking is different than granting. At this time no decisions have been made. 1 So you are aware, to operate a nightclub, also known as a Drinking Establishment per Meridian City Code, a CUP must first be obtained. An application from the Oasis Nightclub was submitted to our Planning Department in January 2021. A public hearing before the City of Meridian Planning & Zoning Commission will be held on Thursday, March 18, 2021 at 6:00pm. Notice of the public hearing will be sent by postcard by the City to all property owners within 500 feet. The Planning and Zoning Commission will make the decision on this project unless their ruling is appealed. If that occurs it would then be heard by the City Council. While I do not have a vote unless there is a tie, any comments regarding the project should be reserved for that public process. The City Clerk has the project file available online for review: The Oasis CUP H-2021-0004. Prior to the public hearing anyone is able to review the application materials at any time as well as submit testimony. If you have any additional comments you are able to submit testimony in advance in a number of ways. Please note, all forms of testimony hold the same weight. Written testimony may be submitted by email to cityclerk@meridiancity.org or by text message by texting “Comment” to 31996. Video testimony can be recorded in advance and sent by email to cityclerk@meridiancity.org. Comments can also be left by voicemail. Please call (208) 288-5607 to record your voice testimony. For additional information associated with this application please contact the City of Meridian Planner Joseph Dodson at 208-884-5533. Thank you again for sharing your comments. Hello Mayor Simison, I am writing to express my strong opposition to The Oasis Nightclub that is planned to be built at the southwest corner of Ustick and Eagle roads. I have lived near this intersection for over 30 years and am shocked that the City of Meridian thinks this is an appropriate location for this type of establishment. Honestly, I am shocked that city planners think this is appropriate anywhere in our city. Is this how you show your commitment to being the “West’s premier community in which to live, work and raise a family?” What am I supposed to tell my children and future grandchildren when we drive past the Oasis multiple times per day about what goes on in that establishment? Have you read the “Know Before You Go” link on their website? Laser warnings, weapons control, dress code with disclaimer, code of conduct outlining concerning security issues. How does this benefit the safety of our community and the moral principles we stand by? Anyone who regularly drives near this intersection will tell you of the difficulty getting in and out of businesses, not to mention the high speeds on Eagle road that nightclub goers will be navigating after alcohol consumption. Let’s not forget all the surrounding residential development in that area, my home included. According to the Oasis website, “over 700,000 residents live within less than a 15 minute drive.” How many impaired nightclub goers do you think will justify driving themselves home because of proximity to their residence? Or how many of the innocent residents will be victims to poor decision making made behind the wheel when nightclub goers return home? We all know if the Oasis existed at this location prior to the nearby residential development, residents would look elsewhere for a place to live, maybe even outside of Meridian. Is this what you want? Think about the message you are sending our community by authorizing this. I simply can not support this in any way, shape or form, and plead with you to do the right thing, and reject development of the Oasis or any other similar establishment to occupy our “premier community” and the values we stand by.
