Question or Comment:
To Whom It May Concern,
I am writing to express my strong opposition to The Oasis Nightclub that is planned to be built at
the southwest corner of Ustick and Eagle roads. I have lived near this intersection for over 30
years and am shocked that the City of Meridian thinks this is an appropriate location for this type
of establishment. Honestly, I am shocked that city planners think this is appropriate anywhere in
our city. Is this how you show your commitment to being the “West’s premier community in
which to live, work and raise a family?” What am I supposed to tell my children and future
grandchildren when we drive past the Oasis multiple times per day about what goes on in that
establishment? Have you read the “Know Before You Go” link on their website? Laser warnings,
weapons control, dress code with disclaimer, code of conduct outlining concerning security
issues. How does this benefit the safety of our community and the moral principles we stand
by?
Anyone who regularly drives near this intersection will tell you of the difficulty getting in and out
of businesses, not to mention the high speeds on Eagle road that nightclub goers will be
navigating after alcohol consumption. Let’s not forget all the surrounding residential
development in that area, my home included. According to the Oasis website, “over 700,000
residents live within less than a 15 minute drive.” How many impaired nightclub goers do you
think will justify driving themselves home because of proximity to their residence? Or how many
of the innocent residents will be victims to poor decision making made behind the wheel when
nightclub goers return home? We all know if the Oasis existed at this location prior to the nearby
residential development, residents would look elsewhere for a place to live, maybe even outside
of Meridian. Is this what you want? Think about the message you are sending our community by
authorizing this. I simply can not support this in any way, shape or form, and plead with you to
do the right thing, and reject development of the Oasis or any other similar establishment to
occupy our “premier community” and the values we stand by.
Thank you for your consideration,
Jennifer Shepherd
