Section 1. It sha1l be unlawfuL for any person, f irr,r,
corporation or association to se11, offer for sa1e, dispense, rent
or distribute at lrholesale or retail r.rithin the corporate linits
of Meridian any rvares, merchandise, goods or chattels of any kind
or description on the first day of the week commonly ca11ed Sunday.
Provided, however, that this section sha11 not be applicable to
works of necessity or chaxity or to the sale of food and meals
served and consumed on the prenises, drugs, medicines, medical
and surgical supplies and appliances or the sale of gasoline,
lubricating ol7s, magazi nes and newspaDers, cigars, cigarettes,
prepared tobacco, rniJ.k, ice cream, fruits, nuts, confectionaries,
soft drinks, or to the sale of axticles and products necessary to
meet energency needs.
Section 2. Any person violating any of the privisions
of the above section sha1l be deemed guilty of a misdemeanor.
Section 3. All ordinances or parts of ordinances in
conflict herewith are hereby repealed.
Section 4. The City Council does hereby declare that it
is the intention thereof to adopt eaclr and every part or section of
this ordinance independently of any other secti on or provision and
should any provision hereof be held to be uncons t it uti onal , such
holding sha11 not effect the validity of any other provision hereof.
Section 5. This ordinance shal-l be in full force and
effect ten (10) days following its passage by the Council, approval
by the Mayor and publication.
