When he began aurveyirg Idaho in 1867, Lafayette Cafiee,
first surveyor general of Idaho Territory, establiehed the
initial point on a rolcanic hill visible for many
miles. Everywhere in Idaho, surveyors depend
upon this essential point in establieNng land
boundaries. The city of Meridian i8 named for
the Boise Meridian -- the eurveyorsr north-gouth
line which runs through Initlal Point.
