I am sure you are as interested as I i:r seeing these crossjlg facilities are provided a.nd rnailtained in the most effective narmer possible. Many of the cities have alreaqy pafuted the crosswalks for this school year; holrever, because of annual changes ln city personne| I felt a remfurder of the responsibl' ities roul-d be nnrtually beneficial- and I am addressing this letter to eachof the cities il the District. I wish to call your attention to the Cooperative Maj-ntenance Agreement, in effect, wj-th your city or being negotiated w:ith your city, vhereia under Traffic Services, ftem 6, the painting of cross- walks and other pavernent narkings withjn the city lJmits, not rncluding center and lane lines, is the responsibility of the city. The city can best do this work, $hen it is required, so as to be most effective. Duriag periods of inclement weather, city enployees can take advantage of short periods of sunny weather to keep these markings bright and effective. F\rrther, it has becone impossible for the Statels pailt crew to repai-nt urban walks through- tut the District and still keep up w'ith other necessary work. We have numberous nrral raLks and ottrer markings which we ale requlred to mafutairl. Better Highways Now, save lives, save time, save money ! STATE OF IDAHO DEPANTME\T OF HIGH\\AYS 5 September 1959 Page Two Crosswalks should be placed at intersection locations whenever possible and in accordance lrith the standards established from the manuaL on Uniforrn Traffic Control Devices. If copies of the s tandards nhich were sent l-ast year are not avail"able, please let us know and another copy w-iII be furnished. I^le request your cooperation and immediate attention to this veryjflportant natter. ff you desire assistance to get started in the program with regard to standarrls or stenci-1" J-ayouts, please eontact this office and our Sign Foreman will work with you. We lcaow you are also very ilterested and we hope by working together we can cooperatively obtain safer school pedestrian operations. Very trul-y yours, fu)T,,u- w.I^I. SACI{I, P.E.
