Greetings: Currently, there is a proposed ATV, UTV, AND GOLF CART ORDINANCE, TITLE 7, MOTOR VEHICLES AND TRAFFIC, CHAPTER 5. I have to express my opposition to this proposed ordinance. I can find no basis for it. As there is no such ordinance for bicycles, mopeds, motorcycles and other vehicles much smaller and less protected, it seems a matter of prejudice that UTV’s, ATV’s and Golf Carts be singled out. Further, there seems to be no basis behind the proposed ordinance, as no instance of malice caused by the use of UTV’s, ATV’s or Golf carts is currently an issue large enough to make the local news. In fact, one would be hard pressed to find one of these vehicles on the streets of Meridian on any given day, unlike motorcycles and the previously aforementioned vehicles with fewer (if any) standard safety features. Further, passage of such a measure is contradictory to the rigorous series of legal requirements and fees already in place to ensure proper use of these vehicles. The least of which are the requirements for them to be assessed, licensed, tagged, and operated only by holders of valid drivers licenses. Unlike vehicles of 50hp or less, which may be operated without any of the aforementioned taxes, fees, licensure or age restrictions. In closing, I find this proposed ordinance to be without cause or merit, constituting an undue burden on those who have taken the time to meet all the legal requirements to operate them, and contradicts current state laws. Sincerely, Greg Cremer 1
