\[RE: Proposal for additional restrictions on Golf Cart, ATV’s, UTV’s\]
Due to work schedules, we are unable to appear at the scheduled Public Hearing on February 1, 2021.
We live in Bainbridge (Ten Mile/Chinden - behind the new Costco) at 3718 W Vanderbilt Dr. Meridian.
There are elements of this proposal we support, namely that unlicensed youth should not drive motorized vehicles on
the sidewalks, roadways or in parks.
However, we are apposed of complete restriction of said motorized vehicles in a new ordinance. Currently, as we
understand, it is against the law for unlicensed youth to operate any vehicle on public roads, sidewalks or in parks.
Specifically, we would like to offer support for Golf Carts, or similarly configured vehicles for adult, license holders in
neighborhoods for two primary reasons:
1) With our mail boxes located up to a block away, a golf cart is a simple, economical, viable option for seniors or
families. Our 87 year old mother, who lives with us, can only make it to the mailboxes with a cart or car. A cart is
easier to operate, and offers no sound or air pollution.
2) Our parks and neighborhood pools have limited spaces for cars, but many of our neighbors use golf carts which
are much smaller and quieter (electric).
If a motorized vehicle (ATV, UTV, golf cart) have the currently required safety elements such as lights, horns, brakes,
rearview mirrors, we believe they should be operable within neighborhoods under current laws and guidelines without
further restrictions.
Furthermore, allowing golf cart use in some developments, and not in others shows unwarranted selective
discrimination. The same rationale used to justify usage in “golf” communities should apply to all neighborhoods in
Meridian.
