Dear Mr. Johnson, I write this email in opposition of your proposed ban on the above mentioned machines. I know you are getting many emails expressing this opposition and I won’t repeat the well-documented and well-reasoned opposition you have already received. I might say I don’t live in Meridian and your proposed ban will likely never affect me directly. However, it is an overreach and unnecessary ban on use of these machines that are completely legal on our state roadways. I am not involved in city government but one has to assume this proposed ban is in the name of safety. Let me assure you the machines I spend my weekends driving are some of the safest vehicles on the road today. My background includes 40 years of racing in all forms. I have raced on pavement, across deserts and off-road. I have been in my share of accidents, some of them at speeds well into triple digits. The machines that are built today are made with phenomenal safety cages, safety belts and are designed to absorb impacts. Much better than many of the vehicles on the road that are in excess of 20 years old. To that end, perhaps the city might consider banning vehicles of a certain age due to their lack of safety features. Many of the older vehicles are still running bias ply tires and have no DOT ratings. These older vehicles don’t have safety glass or adequate rollover protection. Older vehicles do not have to pass emissions tests and they don’t run catalytic converters. I don’t see too many vehicles from the 40’s, 50’s and 60’s with energy absorbing bumpers or adequate seatbelts, however, to my knowledge the city of Meridian is not considering banning them. Again, I won’t repeat all the other reasons to put this proposed ban in the round file. When you start banning specific vehicles from your roadways, you need to be careful the type of momentum you are starting. You better be ready to ban any vehicle manufactured prior to 1970 for lack of safety features. Be careful of the precedent you are setting without thinking this proposed ban through and through. The city of Meridian is wading into a quagmire they likely never saw coming. Thank you. 1 Dr. Zane R. Sterling www.dynamicfatloss.com 1618 N.
