Hello,
It is my understanding that the City of Meridian is considering adopting an ordinance restricting the use of ATV, UTV, or golf cart vehicles on city streets. I have
lived in Meridian for 20 years and I have not seen a problem with these vehicles on city streets. It is very rare to see one in the city. I am UTV owner, and I find it
very convenient to drive mine the approximately 2 or 3 blocks to the gas station on occasion, rather than having to load and unload it from the trailer. And while
I have not yet done it, I have thought it might be nice to take it around the neighborhood to look at Christmas lights some year. But it the 20 years I have lived
here I have rarely, if ever, seen a UTV on the street. I just do not understand why the City thinks there is a need for such an ordinance. If by chance someone
were to be operating one of these vehicles in an unsafe manner, they are subject to all the other traffic laws already in effect, such as speed, stop signs, careless
or reckless driving, DWI etc. as well as the Statewide restriction of not being allowed on Interstates, State Highways, or any road with a speed limit higher than
45 MPH. I do not believe it can be a safety issue, we certainly have a lot of traffic accidents in this town but I have never seen a UTV or Golf Cart in one. I went
to some trouble and expense to install turn signals and a horn on mine for the very times I do take it to the gas station. I would like to go on record as strongly
opposing what seems very much to be an unneeded Ordinance. I have seen many, many traffic accidents since moving to Meridian and I certainly agree that
traffic safety is an issue here, but I also do not see these type of vehicles being a contributor to that problem at all. Lets concentrate on actual problems and not
imaginary ones. As an example, although an Ordnance was passed on cell phone use quite some time ago, that is a real issue that continues to be a huge
problem. I cannot count how many near misses I have had because of someone with their head down on their cell phone not maintaining their lane or changing
lanes without looking because they are on their phone. Lets let Meridian PD concentrate on real issues like that. Please pass my opposition to this Ordinance on
to the City Council.
Sincerely,
Michael Denney
