HomeMy WebLinkAboutLetter from Jacksons t .:. ~~~~ October 12, 20U5 Ted Baird Deputy Gity Attorney City of Meridian VIA FAX: St34-8723 fear Mr. Baird: Thank you for soliciting my opinion on this proposed ordinance. Jacksons is certainly aware of the problem you are trying to address and have taken steps to limit"the supply o1 meth precursor drugs as wEll. Additlonally, we have algD participated in a task force with Idaho State Police on this subject. However, we do not support this proposed ordinance for the following reasans~ • From what I have read, 80% of the meth in the valley is brought in from MexiCO. Limiting legitimate products here a1 home will not have a significant effect on eliminating the meth problem. • We have 100 stores in 6 states. Having focal ordinances makes it difficult for u5 to ensure that we are in compliance. We have to make oxception$ to our prpduct schematics and price book and ensure that as changes are made, due to manufacturer demands that the exceptions stay in place. • Many viable products are not yet available in liquid form. Que to space constraints behind the counter, our only recourse would be to eliminate items that our legitimate customers actually need. This would hat endear us to our customers end would place us at a competitive disadvantage. • We already limit our customers to two bottle equivalents. • Manufacturers are working on creating more products in liquid farm. Where we have the opttvn, we are Carrying the liquid version of the item_ I would prefor to allow the manufaoturers to solve this problem, rather than preventing our legitimate customers from getting the products that they need. While this does not apply fo the City of Meridian directly, we have Several locations where we are the only 24 hour store servicing that community. preventing the vast majority of law-abiding citizens from purchasing legitimate items in the hope that it prevents abuse by a few is overkill. I appreciatE your effortIn trying to curb the use and availability of meth in our community. It is Certainly an impprtant objective. However, this ordinance is not going is have a measurable effect on that goal. Additionally, legitimate customers are going to be more severely impacted than the law-breakers. Not to mention the competitive disadvantage this pieces the smaller retaiter_ Tl7ank you for giving me an ppportunjty to comment. If there is anything else t can do for you on this, or any other issue, please do not hesitate to ask. Sincerely, ~L. ~~ Andrea Jacks n ~ President P.O.
