Great minds like William Shakespeare left permanent imprints on human culture, leaving a legacy of stories and plays that remain valuable to this day — enough so that the streets surrounding Renaissance park all bear names from Romeo and Juliet. It seems fitting that the park identity should honor both the time period and the author. Trademark proposes a bold new vision for the shade structure at Renaissance Park. We propose that it be transformed into a simple outdoor theater space capable of hosting community gatherings and performances. Thanks to the existing terrain at the park, the south-facing side of the shade structure already has a slight bowl shape that resembles an amphitheater. Our design would integrate a stage and proscenium into the existing structure, creating a theater that would allow for a variety of uses. Audience members could sit in the grass and view the stage, even from a considerable distance away. We imagine the Renaissance Stage as a fun place for kids to create impromptu performances and a natural spot for capturing photos, as sunsets would cast pleasing light onto the “actors.” However, should a group be interested in elevating the theater experience, that would be possible. Our bid would include a bar capable of hanging a curtain behind the stage, and since the shade structure already has electrical outlets, lights and sound amplification would be easy to include. We believe that if a serious theater company wanted to perform there (or if the City of Meridian wanted to support summer theater at Renaissance Park), a very satisfying performance could be created for dozens or even hundreds of people to enjoy at once. If the City of Meridian wanted to, there is certainly potential to augment the impact and usability of the Renaissance Theater. The berm that currently creates a natural viewing space could be extended, wrapping around the theater more fully, and creating a true outdoor amphitheater experience. This is beyond the scope of our proposal, but we think the Renaissance Theater could be greatly enhanced with some additional investment from the city of Meridian. Our bid includes a replacement to the current entrance sign. We propose an attractive post sign that both names the park, and links the park’s signage to the Renaissance Theater further within the park. Park Identity at Renaissance Park Design Revisions We want the Meridian Arts Commission to understand these are design concepts, not final designs. We have included in our bid additional design time to take feedback from the Commission and fold those into our finalized production designs. Timeline and Budget Itemized Budget Ÿ Permanent decking subcontracting: $18,000 Ÿ The Renaissance Theater materials: $5,895 Ÿ Park entrance sign materials: $2,250 Ÿ Labor (includes design, engineering, fabrication, and installation): $11,152 Pre-tax total: $37,672 Detailed Timeline Trademark is currently undertaking some very large projects, and our fabricators are already heavily scheduled until the end of June. We will be able to integrate creative revisions, engineer our final designs, and coordinate any subcontracted labor in the spring and early summer, but it’s doubtful we will be able to install these projects until August.
