Mayor Tammy de Weerd,
I feel it is important to share with you and the city council, my perspective and thoughts on future developments like
the SoVi neighborhood. I purchased a home in SoVi neighborhood in May 2017. I am grateful that I had the option to
purchase a single family home that I could afford. This was only possible because of the niche that the SoVi
development provides. I am divorced women with four children. As a single parent, the options to choose from in
Meridian to fit my family size are either renting an apartment for almost double what I currently pay for my
mortgage or a single family home in a traditional subdivision with square footage above 2,000 and a price that is well
above what my income can afford. The developments like SoVi allow people in a new phase of life an opportunity to
own their own single family home without going beyond what is possible to afford. My neighbors are people who
are in a new phase of life. They have gone through a divorce or are a first time home buyers or older couples looking
to downsize from the homes they have lived in raising their families. The number of people who fit this category are
not decreasing as time goes on. Having an option like SoVi gives people the possibility of home ownership, but
without the overwhelming burden of a larger home and with a larger mortgage payment to shoulder especially if
they are entering one of those new phases of life.
Please consider the importance of having options like SoVi available for others. Each day I come home, I am so
grateful for my own home. It is a place where my kids have the space they need to feel comfortable and happy and
that is most important to me.
Sincerely,
Kimberly Porter
