First of all, we are absolutely in support of this new building and recently voted to approve the bond that would pay for it. We currently live in the boundaries that would have our children attend the already over- crowded Rocky Mountain HS, which means that we would most likely change boundaries to attend this new school. We are excited about our three kiddos attending a school that has enough room for them and their peers and their teachers and administrators to learn and be safe while doing so. However, because of these same safety issues, we can not support the current plan for Owyhee HS to be built at its suggested location on Ustick Road. As a mom who experiences the drop off lane everyday first hand, I know the ins and the outs of cutting through the neighborhood, dodging countless mini vans and hoping that I left my house with enough time that I'm not at the back of the pick up line, therefore delaying the hand-off of after school snacks to 'starving' (their word, not mine) and cranky (my word, not theirs) children who vehemently disagree with my choice to bring carrots and apples, instead of their preferred chocolate chip cookies. Yay! So glad they're home! But the truth is, I've been worried about them all day long! Everyday, literally everyday, I get out of my car and make it a point to kiss them and hug them goodbye. I tell them to be a good student and a good friend. They say that they'll try, and then they walk away from me. And in this day and age, it sticks out in my mind that I may not see them again. Because of the pointless gun violence that too often rings through the halls of our nation's schools, I worry every single day that our school, and my kids, will be next. Now I'm not writing to discuss gun safety with you, but I am writing to discuss school safety. Should this horrific incident, or any public incident, occur that would put the safety of our students at risk, I want to know that the people who will care for them, including medical professionals and emergency responders, will be 2 able to reach them in time to make life-saving differences. I want to know that I will have ready access to collect my children should an emergency arise. I want to drop my kids off without mini van catastrophes or pick up lane drama (ok, I know the latter will probably never happen). But why create unnecessary concern when it can be avoided. This, in my mind, includes building a school in the most appropriate and well thought out location. While we will continue to support the building of a new Meridian high school, we ask the city council to consider the best interests and safety of all involved and vote to NOT APPROVE the current proposed location for Owyhee High School. Be a good student. Be a good friend. Megan Case Sent from Outlook
