I also grew up in the old Meridian School District, attending McMillan Elementary, Lowell Scott, and Centennial High. As a student and as a parent, I've experienced first hand both the difficulties of overcrowdedness, and the positive effect of having overcrowdedness temporarily relieved. In considering what the families in this part of the district will see in terms of population growth over the next few years, it is imperative that Owyhee High School remain on track to open as soon as possible. Please consider this when determining whether the district can use the proposed site for the high school. The past few years we've seen rapid subdivision growth west of Linder Road north of the freeway, and that growth continues unabated to this day. As you know, Rocky and the middle schools that feed it are at or over capacity--and the district already had to redraw lines to relieve Herita ge Middle. In the next three years, continued home construction will cause Rocky and our other high schools to hit critical mass. Several of my Centennial classmates are teachers and administrators in the district now, and they echo this sentiment--the sooner the school opens, the better off our kids will be for longer. If we have to wait a year or two more to sort out a site for construction to begin, Rocky and our other high schools will continue to become more overcrowded and our kids will suffer in the classroom. By the time we actually get Owyhee built, the district will need funds to build another school right away. This isn't the proper way to deliver on the promises the district makes when it asks taxpayers for money in bonds, and it will certainly raise questions about whether community leaders are really committed to our children as they greenlight the massive home construction projects around Meridian. I implore you to provide the district the ability to begin building Owyhee High, and help th em deliver on the promise of providing our kids with the education resources, infrastructure, and reasonable class sizes they deserve.
