Here's what they had to say: Request for Mayor and Council Name Eric Thies, President of the West Ada Education Association. _replyto President@westadaea.org Street Address 2064 E Meadowwood dr. City Meridain State Idaho Zip Code 83646 Subject Owyhee High School Message An Open Letter to Meridian City Council, At the last Planning and Zoning commission meeting held on September 6th, 2018 the staff and commission recommended denial of West Ada School District’s application to build Owyhee High School near the intersection of McDermott and Ustick Roads. We are wr iting this letter to urge you to vote against the recommendation of the commission and approve the project, 3 with conditions if necessary. We are the West Ada Education Association and make this request in order to support the students and teachers in West Ada. As you may know the high schools in West Ada are bursting at the seams and are severely overcrowded. Knowing this, a bond committee was put together that included all stakeholders. Through a series of public meetings, they agreed that the proposed location was the best placement for a new high school. The WASD then ran a bond measure making sure the public was informed of the desired location. The bond passed with a 67.3% yes vote. Never before has the district needed a school this badly and been given this clear a directive by the voters. I know the district will work to meet all issues concerning code and safety. However, it is irresponsible to request that roads and sidewalks be extended beyond what will benefit students. Asking th e school district to fund roads and sidewalks to private property is asking the school district to take money from students in order to benefit private developers who own the surrounding property. There are valid concerns in the draft list of conditions, but there are also individuals’ opinions on what would be “nice”. These niceties come at the district’s expense, which means taking away resources needed to educate students. We request serious consideration be given to the list and that it be whittled down to only those issues which impact the wellbeing and safety of the students. We are already in dire need of a new high school and all unnecessary and costly requests, not supported by code, should be removed. The WAEA, on behalf of educators, supports the approval of WASD’s application, and on behalf of the students we urge the city to work collaboratively with West Ada Schools to do what is necessary to get this school built and avoid prolonging this process any further. Respectfully, Eric Thies President, WAEA 208-991-6379 President@westadaea.org This form was submitted at 06:49 PM UTC - 28 September 2018.
