Subject: Owyhee High School
City Council Members,
I am writing you on behalf of the proposed Owyhee High School and why I feel it is s necessity for our
growing community. As a parent of three school aged children located in West Meridian, I personally have
felt and seen the effects of overcrowding in our local schools. Just within a two mile radius of our home we
have seen five subdivisions created and/or expanded upon. This directly effects the student ratios in my
children's schools and has led to boundary line redraw at least once for my children. Factually speaking,
over crowding in schools negatively impacts not only students, but the hard working teachers responsible for
educating our kids. As class sizes increases, positive learning space becomes more limited. In a crowded
classroom children have a harder time focusing on lessons which in turn leads to less learning, less
understanding of core concepts and lower test scores. Teachers feel the brunt of overcrowding as they
become stretched thinner and thinner and slowly become unable to give individual students the attention
they need.
The location of the newly proposed high school will effect my family personally. Living on Ustick and
Black Cat Rd. I can safely assume that this will become my children's high school (an idea that was met with
enthusiasm by not only us, but our neighborhood as well.) Meridian is growing exponentially and as a
community we need to starting planning ahead. Waiting until schools are full before breaking ground on a
new building should not be an acceptable form of action. The community supports this new school, we want
this new school, we need this new school. Please approve the building of Owyhee High School.
