To the Mayor and the City Council:
I am a Meridian resident living South of the freeway. I have five children. All of them have or are attending Mountain
View High School, one of the most over crowded schools in our state and in our city. My daughter was given a foot
stool to sit on for the first several days of her freshman English class because there were 42 students in the class.
Eventually more teachers and more portables helped to alleviate the issue to some degree, but the fact is that my
children have never gone to a high school that was not over crowded.
So when I heard that Meridian Planning and Zoning chose to not approve the annexation and conditional building
permit for Owyhee High School, I was puzzled.
Why is a group who appears to be gung ho on building subdivisions and apartment complexes not willing to do what
us needed to make Meridian a truly family friendly place to live like build schools for the children who are moving to
all the new subdivisions and apartment complexes?
Yes I understand that infrastructure and emergency services are important. Yes I understand that it is farm country
now, but so was the block south of me that is now Century Farm and Is now adding even more students and traffic
out here. Is it only housing developments that are good?
And the argument that students can't bike or walk? Has Mr. Hood been to a local high school lately. The vast
majority of students do not bike or walk to the high school even if they can. It just isn't the reality.
So as a resident of Meridian, I ask you to truly consider the proposal of the West Ada School District and the
predicament that Meridian residents with school children are in at the moment here in our fair city because today, if
I was asked if Meridian is a great place to live, I am not sure I would say yes.
Sincerely,
