Subject: Owyhee High School
Good Morning,
I am a supporter of building Owyhee High School. My children are a part of the West Ada School District,
and the overcrowding in the schools needs to stop.
If the City Planning and Zoning Commission agrees to the building of more homes they must see that they
also should agree to the building of more schools. It is common sense. With the overcrowding of our
neighborhoods, there needs to be an agreement made between all school districts and city committees that
they will work together for the betterment of our community. At this point, it only seems the City P&Z
Commission does not seem to understand the implications of their decision to deny the building of more
schools.
Without Owyhee High School, Rocky Mountain High School and Eagle High School will continue to be
overcrowded. Our school districts graduation numbers have declined rapidly in the last few years and the
biggest reason is the student-teacher ratio. I know of many parents who have pulled their students from these
two schools because they feel their child is being denied what is necessary to succeed. And now the
committee is denying even more children what is needed.
Without Owyhee High School expect to see an increase in crime, delinquency, and the need for law
enforcement. Overcrowded high schools are a petri-dish for cheating, stealing, bullying, suicide, drop-outs,
vehicle accidents, vandalism, teen pregnancy, drug and alcohol usage, gangs, and violence. I urge you to go,
see for yourself the passing periods at Rocky Mountain. See how the parking lot is dangerous before school,
during lunch, and after school because of the overload of students.
Our community is a beautiful family friendly place. But without schools and thoughtful city planning, we
will not be a welcoming community any longer. We have been on the top of charts for Best Place To Live,
and Best Place to Raise a Family, but I have no doubt that we will no longer be on those lists if our P&Z
committee does not accept the responsibility for the housing that they have approved, and meet the
additional housing with additional schools.
If the denial goes through I can only gather that the committee wishes to decrease the safety at every school,
subsequently, decrease every teachers' salary per student, and force parents into extreme frustration. I can
tell you without any doubt and with full integrity that more and more people will refuse to live in Meridian
because of these issues with school overcrowding. Crime and the need for government law enforcement will
increase. And then you will be searching for a new place to put a criminal institution rather than a school.
Our job as parents and leaders in this community is to make it better for our children. I hope you reconsider
and see the good Owyhee High School would bring to Meridian.
