Call for Artists: 2017 ART WEEK CHALK ART COMPETITION
OVERVIEW:
The Meridian Arts Commission (MAC) seeks high school teams to compete in our second annual Art
Week Chalk Art Competition. Teams will be challenged to complete a chalk drawing on Thursday,
September 14, 2017 @ 6PM, on the sidewalk surrounding Generations Plaza, roughly 3’ x 3’ within a
1.5 hour window of time. The theme for this year’s competition is, “Everything you can imagine is
real.” by Picasso. Teams may interpret this quote in many ways, but they must be able to provide a
rationale for how their completed work embodies the theme and it should be apparent to
passersby. Monetary awards will be granted to the school art departments of the three teams with
the highest scored artwork.
ELIGIBILITY:
Each team should consist of at least two students enrolled in a high school in the West Ada School
District, or another high school within the Meridian city limits (private, charter, etc.). All team
members must be high school students. Teams are welcome to bring their own supplies, but MAC
will provide chalk pastels that the artists may use.
DEADLINE: Register your team by 5:00 p.m. on Friday, September 8, 2017.
AWARDS:
A panel of representatives will jury the completed chalk art based on the criteria below:
Interpretation and the clarity of the theme to the viewer (5 points)
Creativity and originality of the depicted theme (5 points)
Quality of artistic composition, workmanship, and overall design (5 points)
Overall impression of the art (5 points)
Awards will be directed to the art departments of the school that the students represent. The
grand prize award will be $100.
