Subject: Proposed Project: Firenze Plaza
Dear Members of the Planning and Zoning Commission,
I am writing in regards to the proposed project, Firenze Plaza on the NW corner of Eagle
and Amity Roads. I am a Tuscany resident that lives in the Stromboli cul-de-sac off Taormina. I
live within 300ft of the property in question. I am asking you to please leave the property zoned
residential. The traffic on South Eagle Road and in and around our neighborhood would
become a mess, the safety of our children would be at stake, and we don’t want or need another
store.
There are a few reasons that traffic would be a mess. The first reason is the traffic circle
on the corner of Eagle and Amity roads. This will make it awful to get in and out of any
shopping/commercial area. It is already hard to get out of Tuscany from either Zaldia or Rome
onto Eagle because of the constant flow down Eagle from the traffic circle. The proposal shows
that the exits out of the shopping center would be right turn only, so what are people going to
do? They are going to find their way through our neighborhood like mice, trying to find their
way out. We do not want any streets connecting to the shopping center for this reason. Our kid
friendly neighborhood roads are not meant to support such traffic. Montague (which is over my
fence) is too narrow and not designed to be a main entrance/exit from the neighborhood. Cars
already have to turn wide just to turn right onto Montague from Amity. There’s a reason I did
not buy a house off North Eagle Road – the horrible traffic. I do not want South Eagle Road to
turn into that. We are a residential area and want it to stay that way. Many of us that bought our
homes within the last year were told that the open spaces around us were zoned residential so
we purchased our new homes (that we paid a lot of money for) without worry of this kind of
thing happening.
The safety of our children will be at stake as more traffic comes through our
neighborhood, if this proposal goes through. Siena Elementary School is a school where all
children who attend are in the “walk zone”. This means that twice a day hundreds young
children are making their way down Montague to the school because there are no buses. Kids
can be seen walking, riding bikes, and riding scooters. We don’t want more cars going down
these roads than they were designed for and risking the safety of the children. There is also a
bus stop on the corner of Montague and Amity for the Victory Middle School Students. (Right
2
over my back fence.) About 30 students get on and off the bus twice a day. This is already a
scary bus stop and adding more traffic is a bad and careless idea.
With the new Rite Aid on Eagle and Victory and the new Winco to be built off
Overland, we don’t need another grocery store. The area in which I live is a quiet, family
friendly, community where people take pride in their homes and know their neighbors. This is
why Tuscany is a desirable neighborhood. We don’t want the lights or noise from a store
operating from 5am-1am. The homes through the whole South Eagle corridor are beautiful
homes high in value. We know that with growth traffic will gradually increase but adding a
shopping area will make it miserable. People don’t move here for the shopping. They move her
for the quiet, beautiful, kid friendly area it is. Please don’t change that. We trusted that when we
bought our homes the areas around us would be residential. I am asking that you keep that in
place.
Thank you,
Deanna Johnson
