There are many reasons why this rezoning should not be approved- 1. Goes against original zoning--people invested in homes and property believing next to them and behind them would be other single family residences and commercial facing Chinden. This is a form of contract between the homeowners and the city and no one expects it to be suddenly overturned just because a developer asks. 2-There is no need for more apartments in this area with those next to Paramount and surrounding areas. 2 3- Goes against City of Meridian’s own Comprehensive Plan as posted online: “Throughout the comprehensive planning process, citizens affirmed that the goals, objectives, and action items contained in this plan are based on seven key community values: 1.Manage growth to achieve high-quality development. 2.Enhance Meridian’s quality of life for all current and future residents. 3.New growth should finance public service expansion. 4.Prevent school overcrowding and enhance education services 5.Expand commercial and industrial development. 6.Improve transportation. 7.Protect Meridian’s self-identity. Changing the zoning to multi-use to allow apartments does not support any of these community values. 4. It is a proven fact that apartments adjacent to a subdivision reduce our property values. Many of us are still trying to recoup the prices we paid during the building boom earlier this decade. 5. We know the city doesn’t control the schools, but quality of education suffers with more overcrowding, as does safety, and parents won't want to buy homes here when this is happening. Furthermore, the safety of our neighborhood is at stake. Not only with the commercial zoning, but even more so with the multi-unit housing. This will just increase the amount of traffic coming in through our neighborhood streets, taking away from the safety of our children who are playing outside. Will there be speed bumps put in place throughout the subdivision to help slow down the traffic? Where are the children of this mult-family housing project going to play? Will there be a community center and park? How close to the current residents will they be building? Is it right for current residents to be surrounded by three-four story apartment complexes overlooking our backyards? I think not. This is definitely not why we moved into this subdivision, and it is a shame where it is heading. We hope that you take all of these things into consideration and listen to all the voices of residents as you move forward with your decision. We appreciate your time and attention.
