SUPPORTING TNS ARTS IS GooD BUSINgSS
(Excerptfrom Americans for the Arts "Top io Reasons to Support the Arts" by Randy Cohen. To read the full report, visit bloa.americansforthearts.ora)
i. Arts promote true prosperity and have a social impact. The arts are fundamental to our
humanity. They ennoble and inspire us. They help us express our values, build bridges between
cultures, and bring us together. Research demonstrates that a high concentration of the arts in a city
leads to higher civic engagement, more social cohesion, higher child welfare, and lower poverty rates.
2. Arts improve academic performance. Students with an education rich in the arts have
higher GPAs and standardized test scores, and lower drop-out rates—benefits reaped by students
regardless of socio-economic status.
3. Arts strengthen the economy. The U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis reports that the arts and
culture sector represents a larger share of the economy than tourism and agriculture. The arts
industry generates $135 billion in economic activity annually that supports 4.1 million jobs.
4. Arts are good for local merchants. Attendees at arts events spend $25.00 per person, per
event, beyond the cost of admission on items such as meals, parking, and babysitters.
g. Arts spark creativity and innovation. The Conference Board reports that creativity is among
the top 5 applied skills sought by business leaders. The biggest creativity indicator? A college arts
degree. "The arts... provide skills sought by employers of the 3rd millennium."

ABOUT TRiASURi VALLiY CHILMN'S THiATiR
Founded in 2012, Treasure Valley Children's Theater is a
professional theater organization dedicated to providing quality
theater arts experiences to families and youth in the Treasure
Valley.
We believe theater arts programs have a powerful impact on the
health and success of a community. TVCT Artists are motivated to
change the world through their Respect, Enthusiasm, Courage,
Commitment, Excellence, and appreciation for the transformative
power of the arts.
WNiRi TO FIND US
You probably heard that we moved out of the small property at 703
N. Main St. in downtown Meridian. We are currently leasing space
at New Ventures Lab in downtown Meridian as well as partnering
with local churches, parks & recreation districts, libraries and
schools to maintain our education and performance programming.
Despite the loss of a permanent space, our program enrollment
and participation has increased 12% over the previous year!
Our long-term plan includes building a 15,000 sq ft. performance
and education space in Meridian. Plans are underway to achieve
this goal and you'll be hearing more about that project very soon.

OCTOBER STAFF REPORT
Thursday, October 12, 2017 3:30 p.m.
City Council Chambers – Meridian City Hall 33 East Broadway Ave., Meridian, Idaho
General
I am going to invite Brian McClure from Planning to come to the November meeting to
discuss the City Comprehensive Plan, see the attached list for the MAC specific items.
I am going to work with Emily Kane and Cara Stone to set up a meeting to discuss the
2018 WineGlass Arts Development contract for Concerts on Broadway.
Public Art Projects Updates
Traffic Box Art
o Agreement with Bryant Ideas good through mid-July 2018. Will need to release
another RFP and get current quotes
o Bryant Ideas having a difficult time wrapping the small white boxes.
Trying to work with ACHD to get the padlocks removed so that wrapping
is easier
No small white boxes completed to date
Mural Campaign
o MDC agreed to commission with Sector Seventeen so that initial meeting with
MDC staff, Callie Zamzow, Ellen, and the artists took place earlier today
(Thursday, October 12)
o Parks Department staff would like to work with Sector Seventeen as the only
applicant for the mural RFP at Homecourt
Parks staff want to work with artists to better conceptualize the project,
they may or may not end up deciding that Homecourt should be the first
site for a major mural project – concern over scale and maintenance
o No proposals returned for City Hall site.
May want to consider some other type of public art project for City Hall
after FY19 (through existing public art plan), like a 3D sculpture off the
wall in that same area, etc.
Heroes Park
o Heroes Park installation was pushed back to allow Ken McCall to work on the
Kieth Bird Legacy Park installations that are planned to be revealed in early
November.
o ‘Unveiling’ ceremony can likely still take place in November.
