Madam Mayor, City Council, City Clerk, Planning Department,
I have been closely monitoring the very slow progress of the possibility of a Costco Wholesale being built in
Meridian, even when it was rumored to be part of Linder Village. I have kept silent, until now, thinking that the City
Council Members would do the right thing and approve the elevation design.
It was an extreme disappointment to see only one City Council Member be the voice of reason and vote in favor of
the submitted design. To say it is ugly and looks parts different Costco Wholesale Warehouses all thrown together is
flabbergasting. Are the Boise and Nampa Costco buildings the only Warehouses these people have seen? Has no
one ever traveled out of the area and seen another Costco Wholesale Warehouse? It is a WAREHOUSE! It is going to
be BIG! I have traveled through the states of Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Utah, Nevada, Colorado and California,
which is home to a majority of the Costco Wholesale Warehouses. And you know what, they all look like
Warehouses. The elevation that was presented to the City Council in July, was by far one of the nicest Costco
Wholesale Warehouse exteriors I have ever seen. The red stripe around the Warehouse is their signature red stripe
and almost all of their Warehouses have one. Would it be acceptable to ask Home Depot to tone down their
Orange or Albertsons to change their Blue because a few residents disliked it? Then why would you ask Costco
Wholesale to eliminate their Red Stripe. The Orange, the Blue and the Red Stripe, these are all characteristics that
belong to these businesses, not the disgruntled residents. The fact is, these disgruntled residents will not be happy
with, or even remotely satisfied with, whatever elevation plans Costco Wholesale submits.
I applaud Councilmember Ty Palmer for doing the right thing by voting to let Costco Wholesale build and design their
Warehouse the way they see fit. I own a home in the Baldwin Park Subdivision of Meridian and I am embarrassed by
the actions of the City Council Members in this matter. The elevation plans should have approved in July, but
because of a few disgruntled residents, this matter has been pushed back about 90 days to October. Costco can
construct a building in that amount of time. Costco Wholesale has been more than accommodating and very
gracious during these unnecessary, lengthy and costly delays. Maybe the City of Meridian should consider giving
something back to Costco Wholesale for the inconveniences their City Council Members, and a few of their
disgruntled residents have caused them.
