There currently is an active application regarding the elevation design of the project which was part of the approved application for the Costco and was specifically asked to be brought back to the community through the public hearing. Because this project is part of an open application, the Mayor and City Council members are prohibited from commenting outside the public hearing. Your comments have been received and provided to our City Clerk and will be included in the public record regarding the elevation design. If you have questions about this application or the process feel free to reach out to Sonya Allen who is he Planning staff member working on this project. She is copied to this email and can get you the answers regarding our process and the next steps related to this specific application. I am writing again in response to a recent article in the Meridian Press titled "City Council asks Costco to bring back another design" I am astounded that the highest priority issue discussed was the design of the building. Once again, I want to urge you to reconsider the problematic location of this Costco. Costco does not belong near a residential area. It will only decrease the value of all homes surrounding and create a bottleneck of traffic in and out of these neighborhoods. Just look at the map. I want to believe you have the best interests of the people of Meridian at heart. This Costco belongs in a commercial area just like all the others. I know the business will be good on many levels for Meridian. However, I am deeply concerned about the location choice for this building. I feel very frustrated in writing this email knowing that where the money is, the power of influence follows, but I cannot sit by and say nothing. I love shopping at Costco and when ever I travel to other locations, I usually find the nearest Costco to do my shopping. In all my travels, I have never seen a Costco built in such a residentially populated area. They have always been located near a freeway exit or in a primary commercial area. Anyone who has shopped at Costco knows it is not sensible to build in a residential area because of the traffic it produces. Just trying to find a parking place alone there is often a nightmare. The current proposed area will be no exception to this outcome. I know that Costco does not want to build on the corners of Ten Mile /Franklin or the Ten Mile/ I-84 exit because they believe they will not get enough traffic or take business away from their other stores. This is simply not true. These other options for a location are middle ground, and in commercial areas, just as they should be. Costco is a destination and its members will drive to get to wherever it is located. I currently drive 20- 30 minutes to go there in Boise and the distance doesn't stop me from going. Costco will draw consumers to them no matter where they are located! Do we really want that massive draw on the corner of Chinden and Ten mile where family homes and schools will be severely and negatively impacted? Please, please be wise and use foresight in influencing Meridian's growth and development . Require that Costco build where they should - in a primarily commercial area where the traffic will not ruin the exceptional family life of Meridian. Honestly ask yourselves if you would want this location for Costco if your home was located in one of the many surrounding neighborhoods.
