Subject:Lost Rapids Project Concerns
TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:
I am greatly concerned about the Lost Rapids Project tentatively planned at North Ten Mile Road and West Chinden
Boulevard.
This is the first time I have seen a large commercial complex being planned in the midst of residential developments,
which will automatically create a more dramatic traffic problem than we already have today at Tree Farm Road (just
west of the Ten Mile and Chinden intersection). As you know, Chinden is a major east-west thoroughfare that backs up
traffic both on Tree Farm and Chinden, mainly due to Chinden (highway 20/26), Ten Mile and Tree Farm each being only
two lanes. Even when Chinden and Ten Mile are ultimately widened to five lanes, these intersection will be further
congested southward down Ten Mile and westward past Tree Farm Road due to the Lost Rapids Project. It will become
a nightmare for residents north, south, east and west needing to traverse these four directions. Creating such a large
traffic problem for the city is poor planning by building a 168,652 square foot Costco and fuel center along with 60,000
square feet of retail stores bordering Ten Mile and Chinden plus 115 apartments behind Costco and 162 patio homes
west of Costco at Tree Farm Road.
I agree that a Costco and other retail stores are needed in Meridian, but consolidating them in the middle of several
residential developments north, south, east and west of this project doesn't make much sense, especially when just a
mile westward along Chinden there is open land where residential developments haven't been established. A better
plan would be to build a Costco with additional services just west of Tree Farm close to Highway 16 and let residences
build around them as needed, NOT a large commercial development in the midst of residential development!
