I understand that there is a lot of negative feedback about Costco coming to my neighborhood. Here is my opinion, for what it is worth: I welcome Costco. I think the road improvements are necessary and welcome Costco (or the developer) paying for these improvements instead of the tax payer. The need for Costco in Meridian is felt any time I have to drive 35 minutes or more to get to Boise or Nampa's location. ---- Here is what I oppose - I do not welcome the idea of 115 apartments and 162 patio homes in this same location. I believe these residences (especially as one is for 55+ lending itself to retirees) coupled with Costco and retail stores will lead to significant traffic and access issues into the Bainbridge subdivision. My second concern is that I do not want to see the speed on Black Cat significantly reduced due to over- development. It takes forever to get from one side of the valley to the other at 35 mph. Chinden to Ustick at 50 mph helps reduce the travel time a bit. I also shudder to think of the speed being reduced on Chinden. 2 ---- A couple years ago I spent a summer in Rancho Cucamonga, California selling door-to-door. I was struck by how similar this area was to Meridian - but how much easier it was to get from place to place. The posted speed limit, in the city, was 45 mph. Medians existed everywhere and turn lanes were more restricted / limited. You could do U-Turns at almost any stoplight. The point here is this: I feel we have had very poor growth strategies when it comes to our traffic system. I understand this is due to many municipalities, state, and even federal involvement. But a Costco here or there doesn't matter when the roads are thought out. We need wide roads (4 lanes of traffic) and medians with limited turn areas. This coupled with better speed parameters will allow traffic to flow better. The proposal to add more stoplights to Chinden and Ten Mile compounds our traffic issues. In essence, Chinden will become as crippled as Eagle Road. Perhaps Ten Mile and Black Cat as well. ----- Anyway this is my synopsis: 1. We need more shopping areas in North Meridian. 2. Costco is a welcome neighbor. 3. "High" Density housing is not welcome with shopping 4. All these Traffic Lights are going to ruin an already poor commute experience Thanks, Mark P.S. - Feel free to call my cell phone should there be any need for me to expound on these topics or to ensure I'm a real person. 208.473.1001
