Subject Costco approval
Message I strongly support the approval of a Costco store in Meridian on Chinden Blvd. It
makes zoning sense and economic sense. Chinden is going to be a 4 or 5 lane(center
turn lane) road soon and is already planned to be widened. Costco is willing to pay a
significant amount to widen a stretch of Chinden reducing taxpayer funds. There will
already be a significant traffic increase with the residential developments being built
all along Chinden. Many people in our neighborhoods and others in the area shop at
Costco but the current stores are a fair distance causing increased fuel costs, time and
pollution. It's imperative that the city review all aspects of a new Costco and not
decide against it due to a few individuals that don't want a new store close to their
neighborhood. There is already a Wal-mart and a Fred Meyers along with myriad of
smaller stores on Chinden. Chinden is a natural location for continued retail and
office development. It is so convenient now to shop close by and visit a doctor or
dentist or go out to eat. If one adds up all the square footage of the existing and future
smaller stores and offices it will probably be more than the proposed Costco. It tax
revenue is also good for Meridian. I understand people don't like development but on
Chinden it is inevitable! Lets not make a decision based on NIMBY, let's be
pragmatic and convenient minded.
