Subject:Position on Lost Rapids Application
Dear Commissioner Cassinelli and Commissioner Perreault,
You have my admiration and appreciation for examining the facts and engaging in serious and sincere
deliberation regarding the Lost Rapids Application before the Meridian Planning and Zoning Commission. Your
voice of concern and reason was the only bright spot in a hearing with a very dark ending. There are so many
discouraged citizens, feeling that their safety and property are secondary to the City pleasing the power
brokers.
Even when one fellow commissioner asked an important question of the applica nt regarding why they had not
considered locating the Costco at HWY 16 and Chinden, the answer seemed ignored by both him and fellow
commissioners. Brighton representatives said it was available and they did not know why Costco had not tried
to purchase that property. Costco said they liked the 10 Mile location better. And some continue to think
Costco will be a good neighbor, when given a choice that does not pose safety concerns to citizens and
basically ruin their neighborhood, they choose to create a traffic and safety nightmare for ten of thousands!!!!
Commissioner Cassinelli, it was down right courageous for you to make a motion to deny the application with
Brighton and Costco staring you in the face. I can't thank you enough for walking the talk when it is difficult to
do so. And thank you Commissioner Perreault for echoing your concerns regarding the huge change in zoning
and the total nightmare of the suggested ingress and egress at Lost Rapids and 10 Mile. I never would have
believed that kn owledgeable people would be willing to look the other way regarding such an unworkable and
unsafe plan! (There is simply no nice explanation for the decision at the ACHD hearing.) It all is so shameful.
I have years of serving in public capacities, including paid, elected and appointed, so I know it is not easy to
balance all the pressures or please everyone. But darn it, sometimes it is just so clear what is the right thing to
do. The decision last night was wrong, wrong, wrong. I hope lives are not lost paying for it.
Thank you again for doing your job,
Elaine Taylor
