Dear Mayor de Weerd and Meridian Councilmembers:
Regretfully, I will not be able to attend the March 1st hearing of the Meridian
Planning and Zoning Commission. I am writing today to share my thoughts on the
Costco zoning application in Meridian. Briefly: I support this development and the
building of a new Costco in Meridian.
As a 3rd-generation Idahoan and 12-year resident of Meridian, I am proud of the
changes that I see in the Treasure Valley. I am concerned about Meridian's rapid
growth, but excited to see mixed-use developments appearing throughout our
community.
Growth is inevitable in the booming Western states. Ignoring it or fighting it are the
wrong solutions. We need to manage our growth wisely. Modern city planning
research shows that the best way to manage this growth is by giving residents the
destinations they need, close to home.
Meridian is no longer just a Boise bedroom community. We have our own centers for
retail, entertainment, park space, and business. Developing a vibrant mixed-use
community is the BEST way to mitigate the worst problems that come with rapid
urbanization: traffic congestion and environmental deterioration.
The two existing Costco centers in Boise and Nampa are two of the biggest weekend
shopping destinations in the valley. A new Costco in Northern Meridian will serve all
Meridian residents and reduce overall car time for everyone in the Valley. Any
destination that takes cars off the overcrowded Interstate is a step in the right
direction.
