Subject Costco in Meridian
Message Dear Mayor and City Council Members,
I would like to express my support for the new proposed Costco in our city. I have
been waiting for years for Costco to finally decide to build a store closer to my
residence, and am excited that this is close to a reality! I want to make sure you know
that not all of us are against this development.
Over the past several years, Meridian has seen tremendous economic growth as you
are well aware. Increased vehicle traffic has been a top concern from a new Costco
opening. With growth always comes additional traffic. I don't think the growth is
going to stop any time soon. Meridian is a great place to live and people want to be
here.
We can have smart growth, such as this new development that includes the Costco
store. From what I have heard, the developer is offering to help widen the roads, for
which Chinden so desperately needs. If I recall correctly, our local transportation
agencies do not plan to widen Chinden for several more years, and definitely not the
area between Black Cat Rd. and Linder Rd. This is a great opportunity for the
developer to responsibly address the increased traffic the new Costco will generate,
while providing those of us in neighboring areas the benefit of road improvements
years ahead of when we would be able to get them by relying solely on transportation
funding from our state and county. I haven't see too many developers in the valley
willing to do this in the past.
The developer and Costco representatives have been fairly transparent with residents
in the area, have held at least one town hall meeting to address concerns, and have
been in touch a few times with updates. I believe they have the right to develop their
land and that they have been very reasonable in addressing concerns. Costco is a
great store and I look forward to having it close to home. I think the benefits of this
development outweigh any drawbacks. Please consider this when reviewing their
request for rezone so that the project can move forward soon.
Thank you,
Charles Stanger
