Message Hello,
I would like to submit a letter of support for the proposed Meridian Costco & Winco
developments. I live right across the street from the proposed Costco development
and less than 2 miles from the proposed Winco development, so my family would be
greatly impacted by changes in traffic and property values, but I think both
developments would be net positives to the city. Meridian is one of the fastest
growing cities in the country, but its residents are, in my opinion, very under-served
in our options for Costco & Winco.
I grew up in Ada County and have seen it go through a lot of changes over the last
15+ years. Sometimes, it's hard to see a pasture turned into a subdivision, but at the
end of the day, the Treasure Valley is a great place to live and will continue to keep
growing! It's not realistic to think these huge pieces of prime real estate will go
unoccupied for much longer, so they may as well be occupied with businesses that
will add a lot of value to the city.
My hesitation comes with the proposed multi-family developments behind Costco to
the north of W Lost Rapids Dr. I understand this area isn't an ideal location for single
family homes, but it could be used for other businesses, more parking spaces, or even
a fenced dog park since dogs are not allowed off-leash at Heroes Park. As a
businessperson, I understand how much more revenue-generating a multi-family
development would be than a mixed-use public area, but I believe it would do more
harm to surrounding property values, which in my mind, makes it a net loss.
Finally, I'd like to thank you for not making decisions about our city lightly. You
don't have easy jobs and I'm sure you receive more criticism than praise, so I want to
thank you for hearing all of us out and taking everyone's feedback into consideration
as you move forward with these developments. We appreciate your leadership.
Best,
Heather Wilks
